Analysis of a horror character- Hysterical character

Hysterical character

It is very common in Horror films to have a hysterical character, usually a female who refuses to believe that something paranormal is happening.They are also dominant about there decision  making, such as; they usually do not want to leave the building they're in, after witnessing a death of a friend or individual. She/he often seen as being vulnerable. Characters involved in the film usually see the ' hysterical character' as a leader however 'she' often cannot handle the tension, she portrays this by breaking into hysterics. The hysterical character often results in being killed or left behind due to her dominance and sensitivity. Although other characters may be killed before her and she could be the 'final girl' but either way she will be killed. Hysterical character has a very big impact on the audience as she is used as a way of creating suspense during the progression of the horror and her hysterical tendencies reflect onto her. Her own paranoia usually gets her killed.

Due to the female characters playing the role of the hysterical characters it connotes their reaction against the battle of the sexes as the actress is usually blonde and lacks common sense.

This character is particularly signified in the scream;

The main actor Casey Becker receives a life threatening phone call. She is asked questions in order to save her boyfriends life. Similarly as a hysteric character would she answers incorrectly and her boyfriend, steve is murdered. As previously mentioned Hysteric characters are very dominant with their decision making, when the tables are turnt she is asked questions in order to save her own life. She has been left behind with the death of her partner. She is then chased by the ghostface and killed, she is left hanging from a tree disemboweled.
